Slack your illusion

Milk Music's full-length debut "Cruise Your Illusion" doesn't quite live up to the hype promised by its initial EP, "Beyond Living."

mm13Seems like it’s been a few years already since Olympia, Washington’s hairy rock outfit Milk Music released Beyond Living, the eepee that launched expectations for the band up through the stratosphere. Does Cruise Your Illusion, their full-length debut on Mississippi indie Fat Possum live up to the hype? Not really, unfortunately.

What made Beyond Living compelling was the record’s sense of urgency (most notably in the title track, which was glorious), something Cruise Your Illusion sorely lacks. In fact, Cruise Your Illusion does a sloppy stumble, collapses in an exhausted heap somewhere between shoegaze and grunge, and then refuses to budge. The strip this week gives the record three stars, but that’s an editorial oversight on my part.

Cruise Your Illusion isn’t terrible. It’s merely average, and barely that.
