MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin— February 18, 2014— The Florentine Opera Company continues its brand new concert series, @ The Center. Made possible through the generous support of the Getty Foundation’s Building Opera Audiences grant program and Opera America’s The Opera Fund for Repertoire Development, the series is part of the Florentine’s continuing community outreach expansion, and will consist of six weekends (Friday and Saturday evenings) of in-studio performances at the Wayne and Kristine Lueders Florentine Opera Center. The first four of these events showcased the 2013-2014 Florentine Opera Studio Artists—Julie Tabash (soprano), Erin Gonzalez (mezzo-soprano), Aaron Short (tenor), and Pablo Siqueiros (baritone)—featuring a sampling of repertoire from opera classics to cabaret hits and holiday songs. The final two concerts will include a recital by Florentine Studio Artist Program alumnus Scott Johnson and a workshop performance of Sister Carrie, a new opera in the making by Robert Aldridge and Hershel Garfein, composer and librettist of two-time Grammy Award-winning Elmer Gantry.

The Alumni Recital on April 11 and 12, 2014 will bring 2010-2011 Studio Artist Scott Johnson back to the Florentine – providing a singular opportunity to check-in with one of the Florentine’s celebrated rising stars. This recital will feature selections performed by Scott Johnson, prior to his return to the Florentine stage in May, 2014, in the role of Schaunard in La Bohème.

Through the generous support of the Getty Foundation and Opera America’s Opera Fund, the series will culminate on May 23 and 24, 2014 in a workshop performance of Sister Carrie, a new opera by Robert Aldridge and Hershel Garfein. The composer and librettist of two-time Grammy Award-winning Elmer Gantry have adapted another classic American novel, Theodore Dreiser’s 1900 Sister Carrie. These talented artists bring the story of Caroline Meeber, a young woman from rural Wisconsin whose world changes fundamentally as she faces dilemmas of physical and spiritual survival when she moves to Chicago, to a new audience @ The Center.
