In April and May 2014, The Field Milwaukee (a Network site of The Field NYC) hosts a workshop series called Fieldwork to aid artists in the creation of new works of art. Eleven artists in the fields of dance, dance/music, music, visual art (painting, sculpture, photography), theater/poetry and yoga/tai-chi gather on 4 Sundays (April 6, 13, 27 and May 4) to show work and receive “non-directorial” feedback from the group of participating artists. The purpose of the workshop is to create a safe space for artists to take creative risks.

The Field (http://thefield.org/) was founded in 1986 in New York City “by artists for artists” as a response to what artists believed was missing for their work development processes. The original group of artists got together to show their work and give each other supportive and concrete aesthetic feedback – planting the seeds for what would become Fieldwork.  Expanding over the years to include services such as arts management workshops and fiscal sponsorship, The Field also created a “network” of sites dedicated to bringing the mission of The Field to localities throughout the continental US and beyond (http://thefield.org/content/field-network).

Fieldwork is a workshop in which artists learn about their work, develop their ability to give critical commentary, and build a community of artistic peers. The primary goal of Fieldwork is to provide structure and support for an artist’s process in the form of: an accurate reflection of their work as it’s developing, a community of artistic peers, deadlines within which to continue creating, connections to potential collaborators and witness to other artists’ struggles to achieve artistic clarity and career goals.

During the Milwaukee Fieldwork series, artists: show work during 2 of the 4 workshop sessions and give feedback at every session using the Fieldwork feedback protocol.  Feedback in Fieldwork is non-directorial: it relays back to the artist what is present in the work, not what the audience would do/wishes to see.  Fieldwork has been described as providing a “test-audience” for the process of creating new work.

The Field Milwaukee is directed in collaboration by Joëlle Worm, Christina Briggs-Winslow, Edward Winslow and Elizabeth Johnson.  The Field Milwaukee counts the following Milwaukee community arts organizations as partners in it’s efforts to serve the Milwaukee artistic community: Danceworks, Gallery 2622 (John Korom), Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN), Theatre Gigante and the UWM Department of Dance.
